North Tama's Boerm to walk on at Iowa

Feb. 28, 2011 2:40 pm
He was going to play quarterback at an Iowa Conference school, but when the Iowa Hawkeyes came calling last month, Brendon Boerm changed his mind about his football future.
The North Tama senior, Source Media Group's area player of the year, will join the Iowa program as a preferred walk-on, his father, Kurt, confirmed Monday. Boerm led North Tama to the Class A state championship this past fall with an unbelievable title-game performance that included over 100 yards rushing, receiving and passing and two touchdowns each way.
“(Assistant coach) Reese Morgan told him ‘We don't know how we missed you, but we did,'” Kurt Boerm said. “We visited the campus with him three weeks ago, talked to Coach (Kirk) Ferentz and Coach (Chris) Doyle, and he went back last week for some academic things.
“He'll be a free safety or a special teams guy there. It was a tough decision for him. He's been a quarterback since he was in fourth grade.”
Boerm threw for 2,350 yards and 29 touchdowns this season and ran for 1,483 yards and 20 scores. He's also an all-state baseball player.
