Midlands Championships: Session II

Dec. 29, 2010 6:08 pm
Tonight's results will be hit and miss as I'll be on deadline, trying to talk to some wrestlers before they head out.
Just refresh and hopefully things keep filtering in.
The top 10 team scores are: 1. Mizzou 31.5, 2. (tie) Iowa and Lehigh 27.5, 4. Pitt 25.5, 5. Wisconsin 25, 6. Clarion 24.5, 7. Cal Poly 22, 8. Oklahoma 21.5, 9. Iowa State 21, 10. Rutgers 20.5.
Mizzou has 10 point scorers alive with 5 in the quarters and five in the consi bracket. Iowa has nine alive with six in the quarters. Tyler Clark, who isn't scoring for Iowa, is in the quarters against Hawkeye teammate Tony Ramos. Iowa State has four quarterfinalists and four in the wrestlebacks.
Wartburg 197-pounder Byron Tate and heavyweight John Helgerson both are in the quarters as are Christian Brantley (Hwt.) and David Bonin (157) for UNI.
McDonough kicks off quarterfinals with a pin over CS-Bakersfield's Frank Lomas. McD built a 10-1 lead before the fall. He'll face Ryan Mango of Stanford, who beat Mizzou's Alan Waters, 7-3, to advance.
Ramos and Clark should be up soon.
Got some catching up to do.
Ramos defeated Clark, 3-1. Scorless first. Ramos E1 in second. Clark E1 in third. 1-1 going into final 10 seconds and Ramos hit a single and finished quickly putting Clark down quick for the T2 and win.
Mark Ballweg led Chris Drouin, 3-0, going into third. Drouin scored a takedown with 5 seconds to go to force OT and then got a takedown on a nice duck under 23 seconds into sudden victory to win 5-3.
At 149, Dylan Ness (Minnesota-unattached) beat Nate Carr Jr., but I don't have a score.
At 157, Daryl Cocozzo beat UNI's David Bonin.
Right now, ISU's Chris Spangler is wrestling Ethan Headlee of Pitt in a 165 quarterfinal. It's 1-1 in the second. Spangler scores a 3-2 win to advance to the 165-pound semis.
At 174, top-seeded Jon Reader leads Iowa's Ethen Lofthouse, 2-0, in the first. Reader moves on to win, 11-2. ISU has three semifinalists.
Grant Gambrall up 2-0 on Stanford's Dan Scherer. Gambrall majors Scherer, 8-0.
Wartburg's Byron Tate beats Riley Orozco of CS-Bakersfield, 6-4, to move into the 197-pound semifinals tomorrow.
Luke Lofthouse is up 2-1 at the end of the second over Matt Whilps (Unattached-Pitt), who has two minutes of RT. Whilps E1 ro start third to make it 2-2, but has advantage with RT. That's how it ends. Whilps wins 3-2 with RT.
Heavyweight quarterfinals going on. Right now, Lehigh's top-seeded Zach Ray is beating UNI's Christian Brantley, 7-1 with 20 seconds to go.
American's Ryan Flores beats Wartburg's John Helgerson, 6-2, at heavyweight.
Iowa has three semifinalists (McDonough 125, Ramos 133 and Gambrall 184). Iowa State has three semifinalists (Chris Drouin 141, Chris Spangler 165 and reader at 174). Wartb urg has a semifinalist in 197-pounder Byron Tate, who was the D-III 197-pound national champion last season.
