McCabe, Larson, Marble say they're OK with new coach

Mar. 29, 2010 2:26 pm
CEDAR RAPIDS - Zach McCabe is totally on board. He says Cody Larson is, too.
And they had yet to even meet their new head coach.
“I watched the press conference this morning,” McCabe said. “Cody watched it, too. I asked him what he thought, and he was kind of on the same page as me. We like him. He seems like a good guy.”
Fran McCaffery was officially announced as Iowa's new basketball coach Monday morning. McCabe, from Sioux City Heelan, and Larson, from Sioux Falls, S.D., are two of four signed high-school recruits whose lives were thrown for a tizzy two weeks ago when Iowa fired Todd Lickliter.
The new coach has promised a faster pace of basketball, but McCabe said he's not too worried about fitting in with that style. He hadn't talked to McCaffery as of Monday afternoon but said he planned to last night.
“At least that's what I've heard,” McCabe said. “I think he's a good coach who has a very good resume (filled with) bulding other programs. I like the up-tempo style and the pressure defense he's going to bring.
“I'm excited.”
Recruit Devyn Marble, son of former Iowa great Roy Marble, said he had yet to talk to McCaffery, either. He admits he hit the computer when he found out who the Hawkeyes were hiring, simply because he didn't know anything about him.
“Yeah, I did some Google,” he said. “I watched his Siena team from last year, to find out how they play.
“I'm excited to meet him. I feel like I can adapt to any style.”
Marble seemed slightly hesitant when asked if he was going to remain in Iowa's camp. He was asked about that hesitancy.
“It's only because I haven't talked to him, yet,” Marble said. “I do want to be a Hawkeye, though.”
Messages for Larson and recruit
Ben Brust went unreturned Monday. Brust was apparently on vacation with his family in Hawaii.
