Sioux City Heelan running back Michael Malloy is fully committed to walking on at the University of Iowa, Heelan coach Roger Jansen said Friday.
There was talk of a visit to South Dakota, the other school that offered Malloy a scholarship, but that will not happen, Jansen said.
Malloy will bring plenty of positives to Iowa.
The 6-0, 180-pounder was incredibly productive at Heelan. As a junior, Malloy rushed for 1,668 yards and 29 touchdowns. He also had 26 catches for 210 yards and two touchdowns. He only rushed 11 times for 83 yards and three TDs and caught four passes for 78 yards and a TD as a senior, but he missed most of the season after suffering a torn ACL.
In a 2010 Class 3A semifinal against West Delaware, a 42-35 Heelan victory, Malloy led Heelan with 235 yards on 20 carries. Last spring, Malloy won the 3A 400 meter crown with a time of 48.34 seconds.
He also scored a 27 on the ACT.
One misstep in August doesn't give a full picture of the person. Every Heelan coach and administrator I've talked to has given Michael high marks. I've followed the news of one mistake and I'm now realizing there's a lot more to the picture.
So, let's follow Michael Malloy's career at Iowa and see where it goes. This picture is far from complete. It's a lesson I continue to learn and need to remember when following news.
