LIVE AT KINNICK STADIUM: First-half impressions, factoids and photos from Penn State-Iowa
Mike Hlas Oct. 2, 2010 6:34 pm
Penn State 6th possession: A 49-yard pass got the ball to the Iowa 3 with :03 left. A 25-yard field goal followed a false start penalty, and the half ends with Iowa up 17-3. I'll be writing my Sunday column in the second half, so look for that here at the Hlog between 11 and 12 p.m. Or just come back here Sunday morning.
Iowa has 234 yards, Penn State 58. Robinson 17 carries, 67 yd. Stanzi 12-15-1, 143 yd. McNutt 4 catches, 73 yd.
Iowa 6th possession: Starts at 32, gets to 50 on 1st play, a pass to McNutt for 18 yards, then another pass to McNutt for, yes, 18 yards. Mauling by offensive line as Robinson peels off some good runs, then a 1-yard keeper by Stanzi for the TOUCHDOWN. Iowa 17-0 with 1:41 left in half.
Penn St. 5th possession: Starts at own 33. Hit on a 26-yard pass for its first trip to Iowa territory. But a punt from the Iowa 44. The punt went ... ugh ... 12 yards.
Iowa 5th possession: A first-down, then a punt. Stanzi lucky not to get picked.
Penn St. 4th possession: A first-down! And another. But Penn St. punts from its own 48, still without a visit to Iowa territory.
Iowa 4th possession: 3-and-out.
Penn St. 3rd possession: Starts at own 26 ... Ballard sack makes it 3rd-and-15 ... End of quarter, Iowa 10-0. Penn State has 1 total yard, zero first-downs. 3-and-out again.
Iowa 3rd possession: Starts at own 49 ... Ends in end zone with a DJK 9-yd TD catch. He lost a Penn State CB, got his feet pinned in fair territory for his 4th TD of the year. Stanzi with 10 TD passes, 2 picks this year. Iowa 10-0, 1:00 left in 1st quarter. Stanzi's only incompletion in nine passes was the interception. Reisner had three catches on that drive. Iowa has
Penn St. 2nd possession: A showcase for Clayborn. Two tackles for a total of minus-1 yard. 3-and-out again.
Iowa 2nd possession: Stanzi picked off on a bomb to DJK into double coverage.
Penn State 1st possession, kickoff return to PS 35. Daniels starting on D-line, Binns not. Troy Johnson starts at MLB, not Tarpinian. ... 3-and-out.
IOWA 1st possession: 77-yard drive, but just 3 points after a first-and-goal at the 9. Stanzi 4-of-4 for 52 yd, including a 24-yard beauty to McNutt. Chaney had a 15-yard run on a reverse. Adam Robinson lost his helmet twice on the drive. That's what you would call risky business.
As the photo (left) shows, the black-gold-black-gold deal worked out pretty well here.
Honorary Iowa captain Chad Greenway got a huge ovation, and milked it by exhorting the crowd to make more noise, for its team. Greenway and Albert Young of the Minnesota Vikings are both here, as is former NFL wide receiver Kevin Kasper and current Kansas City Chiefs rookie phenom Tony Moeaki.
Penn State beat Iowa in field hockey today at State College, 5-3.
Hlastradamus is off to a great start this week, as this passage will attest:
1. Indiana -10.5 vs. Michigan. Indiana quarterback Ben Chappell is good. Michigan's defense is not.
2. Michigan State +1.5 vs. Wisconsin. These are two seemingly stone-age teams that do have passing games. But they're mostly big bruisers. Wisconsin's great at picking on the UNLVs and Austin Peays of the world. Time to face someone your own size.
3. Minnesota +4.5 vs. Northwestern. Hlastradamus is nothing if not stubborn. He had the Gophers last week against Northern Illinois. A colossal mistake. But the points and a lack of faith in Northwestern's all-around team makes the prophet think Minny can have a rare night of competence before the season goes completely off the tracks.
That's three winners, folks.
