Lightning at NASCAR race kills Iowa basketball player's relative
Aug. 6, 2012 10:55 am
A lightning strike outside a Pennsylvania NASCAR race on Sunday killed a 41-year-old man, who was the step-uncle of Iowa men's basketball player Kyle Meyer.
Meyer, an incoming freshman from Alpharetta, Ga., tweeted Monday morning, "I feel extremely blessed today. My step moms brother died at Pocono by a lightning strike. Keep my family in your prayers."
The victim's name wasn't released pending notification of family. Nine other people also were injured because of lightning at Pocono Raceway in Long Pond, Pa.
Meyer is a 6-foot-10 forward and was the first player from the 2012 class to commit to Coach Fran McCaffery.
