Latest Iowa coaching rumor: Wichita State's Gregg Marshall
Mar. 23, 2010 6:41 pm
I've spent all day on this one. Gregg Marshall was interested in the Iowa job in 2007 when he coached at Winthrop. Now he's at Wichita State.
I spoke with his agent, Myles Soloman, who said politely, "I really can't comment on any searches going on. That's something that you'd have to take up with Coach Marshall."
Wichita State's athletics director said Iowa has not asked for permission to interview Marshall. A Wichita State assistant, Chris Jans, coached Kirkwood Community College in the mid-1990s and hails from Iowa. Jans didn't want to talk about the subject.
Marshall has 12 years of coaching experience. He led Wichita State to a 25-10 record this year, including a 74-57 win over Iowa. He's coached the Shockers for three seasons and led them to the NIT this year. He has compiled a 247-130 record and took Winthrop to seven NCAA Tournament appearances. He is the winningest coach in Big South Conference history.
Wichita State shot nearly 57 percent from the floor against Iowa and hit 11 of 21 3-point attempts. Here's what he said after the game:
"Coach Lickliter is going through some hard times now trying to build this thing the right way and he will do that," Marshall said after the game. "But in the history books this will go down as a win for us against Iowa basketball in the Big Ten."
Does this have any traction? Hard to say. But it might have more legitimacy than most of the rumors I've chased down in the last week.
