Kroul joins Jets practice team
Sep. 7, 2009 11:21 am
Four former Hawkeye players landed on NFL practice teams Sunday after failing to make their teams' final roster.
Two days after being let go by the New York Jets, Matt Kroul landed on the team's practice squad. Kroul, who hails from Mount Vernon, played on special teams and at nose guard for the Jets. He was a late addition to the team's practice team.
The Tennessee Titans added defensive tackle Mitch King to its practice squad after cutting the Burlington native on Friday. King was the Big Ten's Defensive Lineman of the Year last year.
Former Iowa defensive end Bryan Mattison landed on the Baltimore Ravens' practice team for the second straight year. Mattison since has switched to offensive line and was listed as the Ravens' second-team guard in training camp. Mattison's dad, Greg, is the Ravens' defensive coordinator.
Former Iowa tight end Scott Chandler was signed to the Dallas Cowboys' practice team as well. Chandler last played for Iowa in 2006.
Former Iowa center Rob Bruggeman (Tampa Bay), a Cedar Rapids native, had moved up to the second-team center spot in training camp. He has yet to sign with a team.
Other players with local ties landing on practice teams include Cedar Rapids native and wide receiver Adrian Arrington (New Orleans Saints), ex-Iowa State linebacker Alvin Bowen (Buffalo Bills) and former UNI defensive tackle Everette Pedescleaux (Denver Broncos).
Teams can add up to eight players to its practice squad. The players are paid $5,200 a week and can be signed by another NFL franchise at any time. It's possible Bruggeman could be signed to a team's practice squad at any time this season.
Other former Hawkeyes cut last week include defensive end Derreck Robinson (Dallas Cowboys), safety Marcus Paschal (Indianapolis Colts), wide receiver C.J. Jones (Denver Broncos). Miami Dolphins linebacker Matt Roth was placed on the team's non-football injury list, meaning he can't play or practice for the Dolphins' first six weeks of the season. Roth has been sidelined with a groin injury for all of training camp.
