Is Schwab UNI bound?

May. 10, 2010 5:43 pm
Maybe it's a sign. Maybe it's just a simple coincidence.
University of Iowa assistant coach Doug Schwab was scheduled to speak at an I-Club function in Waterloo this evening. I was told by someone attending the event that he expected Hawkeye assistant Mike Zadick to attend instead of Schwab.
Schwab, a three-time All-American and national champion for the Hawkeyes, is a finalist for the Panthers head coaching job, replacing former head coach Brad Penrith who was fired at the beginning of April. Schwab, SUNY-Binghamton head coach Pat Popolizio and Iowa State assistant Chris Bono were announced as the school's three finalists and all interviewed last week.
The hiring announcement is expected sometime this week. I was told possibly Wednesday or Thursday. Does Schwab's absence, if it is accurate, mean that he will be the Panthers new head coach? Maybe he has a previous engagement he can't get out of or he's still celebrating his Red Sox latest victory over the New York Yankees.
Either way, it's certainly the kind of thing that pours fuel on the fire of talk that Schwab will be the next head wrestling coach at UNI.
