Iowa wrestling's sounds of the season

Apr. 6, 2010 11:20 am
Our partners KCRG-TV9 put together an entertaining package with memorable moments and soundbites from this season. It features comments from University of Iowa Coach Tom Brands among some of his wrestlers.
Among my favorites included in the package is the press conference where Brands said he's not sending someone out on a rival's mat that is going to poop his pants. Classic. How can you not like the straight forward, "Get 'er done, stud"? Don't forget how the Sheldon native let every one know that VanDen Berge is a good ol' Northwest Iowa Dutch name. How about this gem that is indicative of Hawkeye wrestling, "I was raised and coached not to believe in parity."
I've known the Borschels since I started covering wrestling when he was a sophomore at Linn-Mar. After all, I was the sage that once said his jump from 103 to 125 was way too much (This is what caused me to hate giving predictions). Jay's impression of his mother, Carol, was priceless. It was pretty much right on, too. You've got to love the excitement of wrestling moms.
Of course, Brent Metcalf has always given great, no nonsense quotes. I love his comment "How many gold medals does Tom Brands have? Two, one, I'm sorry. How many does Dan Gable have? One. I've got to get two. I've got to get two." Of course, I love his response to someone asking him about meeting others expectations "This is my mold" that he defines himself. Great lesson.
