Iowa men to face Augustana in exhibition
Aug. 27, 2013 11:50 pm
Slowly but, well, very slowly, the Iowa men's basketball squad is putting the pieces of its schedule together.
The Hawkeyes will face Augustana (Ill.) College in an exhibition at 3 p.m. Nov. 3 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena. Surprisingly, the teams have played 10 times historically, and the Hawkeyes have won seven times. All three Augustana wins were between 1901 and 1906.
"We could not be more pleased with the opportunity to play against the Iowa Hawkeyes this season," Augustana Coach Grey Giovanine said in a news release. "Coach McCaffery and his staff have positioned the Hawks to be a national top 25 program and Big Ten contender and we appreciate them affording us the chance to be included on their schedule. This will be an experience that I expect our players to embrace and remember as they go forward."
Augustana finished 19-8 last year and is led by sophomore forward Ben Ryan, who was named d3hoops.com's national rookie of the year. Ryan averaged 11.7 points and 6.8 rebounds per game. The Vikings have a local player in sophomore Jake Gylten, who helped lead Iowa City West to the Class 4A state title in 2011-12.
Iowa has yet to announce its full non-conference schedule. Some of the pieces are known, however. Iowa faces Nebraska-Omaha on Nov. 10, and plays host to Penn on Nov. 22. The Hawkeyes will play three games the Bahamas at the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament from Nov. 28 through Nov. 30. Iowa will host Notre Dame on Dec. 3, meet Drake at Des Moines' Wells Fargo Arena on Dec. 7 and battle instate rival Iowa State on Dec. 13 in Ames. Iowa had four other games scheduled and needed one more before it planned to release it to the public.
Three of Iowa's 18 Big Ten games also have been announced. Iowa plays host to Michigan State on Jan. 28 and Ohio State on Feb. 4, then travels to Indiana on Feb. 18 as part of ESPN's "Super Tuesday" series.
