Iowa basketball program update
Mar. 31, 2010 3:47 pm
Over the noon hour, myself, Tom Kakert from HawkeyeReport.com and KXIC Sports Director Brent Balbinot interviewed new Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery on multiple topics during "Good Call" on 800-AM.
Here are some of the highlights:
- McCaffery has met with every player on the team. He said the players were excited, including sophomore forward Aaron Fuller.
- McCaffery will meet in person with every Iowa signee beginning April 8, per NCAA rules.
- McCaffery and his family are traveling today to Indianapolis for the Final Four. He plans to have breakfast with former Iowa coach George Raveling over there, and then meet former coach Tom Davis in the future.
- McCaffery said he did not discuss the position with former coaches Steve Alford and Todd Lickliter before taking the job.
In his initial news conference, McCaffery said he would consider adding a former Hawkeye as an assistant. I spoke with Kenyon Murray today, who said "please tell everyone" that he's not interested in coaching. Murray said he and other former players will play a role in the program, possibly attending I-Club functions and promoting it in a variety of ways.
