Iowa basketball notes: Tucker with another 20, Bawinkel shoots a free throw?
Dec. 5, 2009 6:49 pm
Iowa senior guard Devan Bawinkel sank his first two free throws of his Iowa career Saturday. They also were his first two attempts.
Bawinkel transferred into Iowa last year and shot the ball 144 times last year. He sank 52. All but five of his shots were 3-point attempts.
This year Bawinkel has shot the ball 26 times - all 3-point attempts. Saturday, he hit 3 of 4 3-point shots, and his free throws came after his third 3-point attempt. So Bawinkel had 169 field-goal attempts before attempting one free throw.
Interim coach Chad Walthall subbed for Todd Lickliter, who was out with a medical procedure, was asked if he could take credit for Bawinkel's free throws.
"Oh that's right," Walthall said. "Is that his first free throw ever? He made them, too. Got to get to the line more often."

Iowa freshman Eric May came up big in his first career start. He had a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. He also had three blocks and three assists. Two of his blocks sent the crowd into a frenzy.
"At some points I was lucky I was able to block them. You can't be relying on those," he said.
May started for fellow freshman Brennan Cougill, who was out with an illness the last couple of days. Cougill still played 14 minutes.
"(May) obviously brings a physical presence, and he shot the ball well today, and I thought he defended well," Walthall said.

Aaron Fuller played 19 minutes, his highest amount since the team's second game against Duquesne. Fuller sprained his left ankle against Bowling Green in the third game and has played sparingly since.
"It's sore, but we got the win, that's all that matters," Fuller said. "(I've just been) icing it a lot, probably about 23 hours of the day."
Fuller scored eight points an grabbed five rebounds.

Iowa tied a school record with 15 3-pointers. Anthony Tucker notched his second straight 20-point performance by scoring 20. He hit 6 of 11 3-point attempts.
"I'm starting to shoot the ball a little bit better so it's nice," he said.
