University of Iowa senior Kamille Wahlin is writing a blog for TheGazette.com while she travels with her Hawkeye teammates across Europe. Wahlin is a history major from Crookston, Minn.
Hello to everyone back in Eastern Iowa! Today is our first full day in Europe, so the team is excited to get out and see the sights.
I ended up going to bed around 9 last night because we were so tired from travel. I tried to stay up as late as possible to get settled on European time, I thought 9 p.m. was pretty good! I don't remember the last time I slept that much but it was needed. I woke up this morning ready to sightsee!
The first place we visited was the Terezin Concentration Camp, located about an hour bus ride away from downtown Prague. I'm a history major and obsessed with events like World War II, so this was an eye-opening experience for me. We had a great tour guide who explained everything in detail. The entire team left the hour-long tour in a pretty somber mood. To hear how many people died at the camp or how many were transferred to other camps was something I won't forget.
One of the main memories I will take away from the camp was the difference between the Nazi headquarters and where the “prisoners” were forced to live. The headquarters were big buildings and they even added a huge swimming pool for the soldiers right in the middle of World War II. The “prisoners” were forced into small cells about the size of my apartment bathr
oom and there were 12 people in one cell at a time. I just couldn't believe what I was seeing.
We are on our way back from Terezin right now. When we get back to the hotel, most of us are going to grab lunch at a local place and go check out the Astronomical Clock in Old Town Square. Some of us walked around the Old Town Square yesterday and the old buildings and churches are beautiful. I can't wait to see more of Prague!
We have a boat tour of Prague arranged for tonight. I'll be sure to fill everyone in on that tomorrow.
Thanks again for following along!
