If Kinnick Stadium had a Ring of Honor ...
Mike Hlas Oct. 25, 2011 8:45 am
Who would be in your first group of inductees?
Rings of Fame and Rings of Honor seems to be more an NFL thing. They have the names and years played of their greatest players. Several NFL teams have them. I only remember seeing them at two college stadiums I've visited, Michigan State and Arizona. Although I'm sure I'm forgetting some. But there aren't many.
This occurred to me because Michigan State added wide receiver Gene Washington to its Ring of Fame. I believe he is the sixth former Spartan player to have his name added. He joined the MSU Athletics Hall of Fame in 2000, so this Ring of Fame thing is even more exclusive.
Like I said, most college teams don't have them, and I'm not lobbying for Iowa or anyone else to do so. This is just for discussion. Besides the man whose name Nile Kinnick Stadium bears, who would be your five other initial inductees to an Iowa football Ring of Honor?
Kinnick (24) and Calvin Jones (62) are the only Hawkeyes to have their numbers retired.
Ex-Hawkeye players in the College Football Hall of Fame are Jones and Kinnick, Aubrey Devine, Randy Duncan, Alex Karras, Gordon Locke, Chuck Long, Duke Slater and Larry Station.
I realize most of those players predate most or all of us. That said, who would be in your Iowa Ring of Honor?
This is in no way advocating such a thing. It's for discussion purposes only.
Calvin Jones, 1954
