IOWA CITY -- The No. 2 Iowa wrestling team lost to No. 4 Minnesota in Carver-Hawkeye Arena on Saturday, 19-15.
Two highly-ranked Hawkeyes -- No. 3 Thomas Gilman at 125 pounds, and No. 2 Derek St. John at 157 -- suffered upsets.
Gilman faced the Gophers' unranked Sam Brancale, who quickly made a statement by throwing Gilman to his back for an early five points. Gilman fought off his back once, only to let Brancale whip him over again for a first-period pin.
In Iowa's other suprising defeat, Derek St. John took a 3-2 lead into the third period against 14th-ranked Dylan Ness. But Ness took St. John to his back for a reversal and nearfall points for a 7-4 victory. It is the first time in St. John's career that the senior has lost consecutive matches.
There were some positive results for Iowa in the dual. Junior Mike Evans knocked off 5th-ranked Logan Storley, an opponent who had beaten Evans all three times the pair had wrestled previously. Evans, ranked 6th at 174 pounds, used an escape in a tie-break period to seal the victory. Hawkeye heavyweight Bobby Telford scored a takedown in the closing seconds of overtime to beat No. 2 Tony Nelson, finishing the dual on a positive note for Iowa.
