We decided to come up with a list of the top University of Iowa wrestlers in conjunction with our recognition of the 100th season of Hawkeye wrestling. The list may vary from each Hawkeye fan, but here is our list of Top 10 Hawkeye Wrestlers. The list was hard to determine given the talent that has trained in the Hawkeyes' practice room. Share your thoughts on your top Hawkeyes of all-time.
1. Tom Brands (1988-92): Three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American with a fourth-place finish as a freshman. Posted 158-7-2 career record. 1992 NCAA Championships Outstanding Wrestler. World (1993) and Olympic (1996) champion.
2. Barry Davis (1980-85): Three-time NCAA Champion. finishing seventh as a freshman. A two-time Olympian and silver medalist in 1984. A four-time Big Ten champion with a 162-9-2 career mark, owning Hawkeye victory records for career (162) and season (46).
3. Ed Banach (1979-83): Three-time NCAA champion and four-time finalist. Olympic champion in 1984. Four-time Big Ten champion and 1983 Big Ten Athlete of the year. Finished 141-9-1, including school-record 73 pins.
4. Lincoln McIlravy (1992-97): Three-time NCAA champion and four-time finalist. Olympic bronze medalist in 2000. Career record of 96-3 record, winning 79 of last 80 matches, for program's second-best winning percentage (.970).
5. Randy Lewis (1977-81): Two-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American, placing second as a freshman and seventh as a senior. Two-time Olympian, earning a gold medal in 1984, Went 127-11-1 with 64 pins, second on Iowa's career list.
6. Jim Zalesky (1980-84): Three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American, placing fifth as a freshman. Named 1984 NCAA Championships Outstanding Wrestler. Posted 132-7-1 career mark, capping career with school-record 89-match win streak.
7. Mark Ironside (1994-1998): Two-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American. Four-time Big Ten Champion and named Big Ten Wrestler of the Year three times. First of two Hawkeyes to win Dan Hodge Trophy (1998) given to the country's top collegiate wrestler. Finished 127-10, ending career with 67-match win streak.
8. Joe Williams (1993-98): Three-time NCAA champion and four-time All-American, placing seventh as freshman. Two-time Big Ten champ. NCAA Championships Outstanding Wrestler in 1998. Holds 129-9 career mark, including 34-0 campaign as a senior.
9. Eric Juergens (1997-2001): Two-time NCAA and Big Ten champion. Third at nationals as a freshman and sophomore. 2001 Big Ten Wrestler of the Year. Completed career at 120-13, winning 65 of last 66 bouts.
10. Joe Scarpello (1946-50): Iowa's first four-time All-American. Placed top three each season and won national titles as a freshman and senior. Career record of 51-5.
