Gatens, May talk about relationships with coaches
Mar. 10, 2010 9:09 pm
FAST BREAK
Sophomore Matt Gatens is one loss from ending half his Iowa career. He will start for the 64th consecutive game and end the season as the team's leading scorer this year. He embodies qualities that people want in an Iowa player -- tough, hard-nosed, consistent, willing to do what it takes to win and he's a darn good player, too. Unfortunately, his career hasn't panned out the way he envisioned.
Gatens was an energetic player at Iowa City High, which hed led to a state title his senior season. Now, he plays just as hard but seems to lack enjoyment, both on the court and in interviews. It makes one wonder if he's still having fun.
"It's been a rough couple of years," Gatens said. "You try to stay positive but it's tough at times. You feel a lot better about yourself if you're making those strides and be that group of guys to get this program turned around.
"It's definitely been disappointing with the results. It's a place where I chose to be. It's a great community and environment. My friends and family are here, I enjoyed that part of it. On the court it definitely hasn't been fun, losing and setting records in that aspect."
PLAYERS ON COACHES
I recently asked Gatens and Eric May about their relationships with Coach Todd Lickliter and the coaching staff. Neither revealed much -- hardly unexpected -- but I expect many of you will read between the lines on their comments.
GATENS: "It's different than some coaches I've had, but he keeps it very professional. He's a great practice coach and a great coach on the floor. He's very down-to-earth and humble and he's easy to talk to. His assistants are the ones you usually you talk more with, the position coach. I have a good relationship with all of them."
MAY: "We have a close relationship. I like the coaches. It's not like you walk past them and you don't say anything. We're supposed to have a good relationship. I know I do."
LICKLITER'S HEALTH
Lickliter missed three games in December after undergoing surgery to place a stent in his carotid artery to alleviate headaches. Lickliter said he has no ill effects from the surgery.
"I'm doing great, thanks," he said. "I feel great. I've got basically a clean bill of health. The other night had a little bit of a headache, but it had nothing to do with that. It had to do with Wisconsin."
