Former Hawkeye Comes Home to Help Brett Greenwood
Oct. 21, 2011 4:54 pm
Tyler Sash signed hundreds of autographs on Friday to raise money for his former teammate, Brett Greenwood. The 24-year-old Greenwood is recovering at an Ankeny rehabilitation center after collapsing during a workout last month.
"Once you're a Hawkeye you're always a Hawkeye," Sash, who's now with the New York Giants, said. "We're all brothers, we're all family, I think anybody would do the same thing for me."
Sash appeared at Sheels in Coralville from 2:30-4:30 Friday. Both autograph seekers and the popular sporting goods store donated money to the Greenwood family.
"They're going to have a lot of bills, a lot of travel time," said Sash.
Sash is in Iowa because the Giants are on a bye-week. The former Hawkeye said he plans to visit Greenwood, who sustained brain injuries as a result of the collapse, in Ankeny over the weekend.
"He's making progress and that's all we can hope and pray for," he said. ""He's going to be fine, it's Greenwood."
Greenwood had been let go by the Steelers just days before the incident. The fact that he was back in the gym trying to get better shows what kind of a competitor he was, Sash said.
A foundation for Brett Greenwood was set-up earlier in the week, you can visit the site by clicking
