ESPN's Dick Vitale talks about new Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery
Apr. 2, 2010 2:53 pm
ESPN broadcaster and Basketball Hall of Fame member Dick Vitale was at the Final Four today, so I grabbed a chance to ask him about new Iowa basketball coach Fran McCaffery. Here is what he said:
"They're getting a guy that's certainly got great, great organizational skills," Vitale said. "He's a teacher, he's a guy that's got a great background. He was at Notre Dame. He won at Siena. With the resources available now at Iowa, I think you're going to see a lot of positves happen. They're going to play a little fast-paced game, get people excited, sell some tickets and get a little bit of a transition game, and that usually leads into better recruiting."
I also asked him if he was surprised with Iowa's decline in men's basketball:
"I think that's why the change was made. Todd (Lickliter) is a good guy but obviously it just didn't fit based on what was taking place," Vitale said. "But Fran will get that going because I think he's going to recruit athletes that will be able to get up and down the floor and create excitement."
