Draxten's the latest Hawkeye on the disabled list

Dec. 29, 2009 2:07 pm
The disabled list continues to grow for the University of Iowa women's basketball team.
Hannah Draxten's season-long battle with a herniated disc in her back has come to an end. Draxten will miss the rest of the season.
"Hannah ... has been incredibly strong in trying to overcome the pain. But, unfortunately the injection has not helped and she has lost mobility," Iowa Coach Lisa Bluder said Tuesday. "She may even need surgery."
The news comes two days after the announcement that Theairra Taylor is lost for the remainder of the season with a torn ACL in her right knee.
JoAnn Hamlin suffered a season-ending (and most likely, career-ending) blood clot in her right leg just before the season began. Shante Jones has been out for weeks due to unspecified disciplinary reasons.
It's likely that the Hawkeyes will complete the rest of the season with no more than eight players.
"This is obviously another devastating loss for our team," Bluder said. "But I am proud that our team continues to battle despite the adversity."
Iowa (7-6 overall, 0-2 Big Ten) fell to Penn State, 77-73, in overtime Monday at University Park. The Hawkeyes host Wisconsin on Thursday.
Draxten is a 6-foot sophomore swing player. As a freshman, she played in 30 games, averaging 3.2 points and 2.0 rebounds per game.
This season, she played 39 minutes in four games, scoring eight points - all in a win over Drake on Dec. 20.
