Doc's No. 7 -- 2002 at Michigan
Jul. 8, 2010 12:36 pm
This post coincides with a series on Kirk Ferentz's top 10 games during his Iowa tenure. Mike Hlas and Marc Morehouse also blog on this topic.
If there ever was a moment when Iowa arrived as a program under Ferentz, it had to be Oct. 26, 2002 at Michigan Stadium. No. 13 Iowa was 7-1 but faced perennial power No. 8 Michigan at a stadium where the Hawkeyes had not won in 12 years.
Iowa then throttled Michigan with its worst home loss in 35 years, 34-9. Iowa held Michigan to 22 yards rushing and nearly doubled up the Wolverines in time of possession. Iowa choked Michigan's passing game with five sacks and kept the Wolverines to 71 yards offense in the second half.
The game provided a springboard for Iowa that season, and the Hawkeyes beat their last three regular-season opponents by a combined 93 points to clinch an unbeaten league season and a shared Big Ten title.
Iowa's Dallas Clark (44) bulls into the Michigan line Saturday at Ann Arbor, Mich. The Hawkeyes improved to 5-0 in the Big Ten with the victory over the eighth-ranked Wolverines.) Iowa's Dallas Clark (44) is taken down by the Michigan line in the first half Saturday, Oct. 26, 2002, at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
