Did USA TODAY shortchange Fran McCaffery?

Nov. 5, 2013 2:26 pm
Tuesday, USA TODAY had a photo/video feature of what it said are the 10 angriest coaches in college basketball.
The term "angriest" is subjective. You could say "most passionate" if it refers to coaches you like. You could say "nuttiest" if it's coaches you don't particularly enjoy.
Basketball players are called "cagers" for a reason. Emotions get frayed in the cage, er, arena. No one has helmets or pads or football gibberish to hide behind. It can be pretty raw, primitive stuff sometimes. A lot of the time, actually.
Of the 10 coaches selected by USA TODAY's Scott Gleeson, four are in the Big Ten. No. 1 is Wisconsin's Bo Ryan. In at 5-6-7 are Michigan State's Tom Izzo, Ohio State's Thad Matta and Indiana's Tom Crean.
Like his team, McCaffery has to be in the "also receiving votes" category. Either that, or The Gazette's Brian Ray did a lot of creative photo-shopping in the shots that follow. Which he most certainly did not.
Bo Ryan is No. 1 (Brian Ray/The Gazette-KCRG)
