Catching up with Iowa hoops
Jul. 8, 2013 11:37 am
It's almost a given in the working world that the busiest "normal" days are the days before vacation/holiday and the day you return. That seems to be true here as well.
Iowa men's basketball generated some news last week while I was off, and it wasn't all in the summer Prime Time League. Iowa junior forward Aaron White made the US roster for the World University Games, and has contributed in big ways. Former Iowa guard Patrick Ingram has found a home, and the Hawkeyes hosted a potential transfer.
White, a 6-foot-8 incoming junior, is one of 12 players on the national roster competing in Kazan, Russia, and he has enjoyed plenty of action. In the team's exhibition against a Russian professional club last Thursday, he scored 11 points in 15 minutes. In the US's 140-46 rout of United Arab Emirates, White scored 16 points, grabbed four rebounds, blocked two shots and chipped in with an assist and a steal in 20 minutes. Today, in a 96-54 win against Czech Republic, White scored two points and pulled down three rebounds in 13 minutes.
White talked about the team and their on-court relationship after the USA dispatched UAE.
"We're unselfish," White said. "That's how we have to play in a competition like this. Back at school, every one of these guys is one of the best players at their respective schools, but when it comes to something like this, you have to play for your country and play for your team. You've got to take roles you're not accustomed to, and I think we're doing that well. It shows with the 36 assists."
White has a daily blog set up on Iowa's athletics website. Click here to read it
The USA (2-0) faces Sweden (0-2) at noon Tuesday. ESPNU will televise the game at 6 p.m.

Former Pepperdine guard Jordan Baker visited Iowa last Wednesday, reports HawkeyeReport publisher Tom Kakert. Baker, a 6-foot-4 shooter, started 45 games over two seasons for Pepperdine. He averaged 11.4 points last year and knocked down 37.4 percent from 3-point range but shot just 67.7 percent from the free-throw line. He started 28 of Pepperdine's 30 games and averaged 31.2 minutes. Baker, a Tempe, Ariz., native, was an honorable mention all-West Coast Conference selection last year.

Former Iowa guard Pat Ingram, through a response on Twitter, apparently is headed to Indianapolis-based IUPUI this year. Ingram, a 6-foot-2 sophomore, thanked a friend for his congratulations. Ingram, who played high school ball at North Central High School in Indianapolis, averaged six minutes, 0.9 points and 0.6 rebounds in 19 games. IUPUI has yet to comment about Ingram's status.
