Brommer’s practice work equals playing time
Jan. 12, 2010 7:23 am
IOWA CITY - Andrew Brommer's minutes recently have increased, concurrently with a better effort in practice, Iowa Coach Todd Lickliter said Monday.
Brommer, a 6-foot-9 sophomore post, played a season-high 14 minutes Saturday against Michigan State. He scored four points, grabbed three rebounds, had one assist, one steal and no turnovers.
“He should understand what we're trying to do and be able to do it,” Lickliter said. “We've got a philosophy that you've got to do it in practice before you get a chance to do it in the games, and he's been doing a better job in practice. He's earned some minutes, and when he's played, he's given us an added lift.”
Brommer has played in eight games this year but only in four has he played more than 10 minutes. For the season he averages 1.9 points and 1.3 rebounds a game.
“I just tried to come in and do what I could to help the team out and try to win,” Brommer said. “When my number's called, I tried to give 110 percent.”
Brommer has played in each of Iowa's last three games, including 11 minutes against Minnesota. He was one of three players Iowa used in the post against Michigan State.
“It's just (about) more consistency in practice,” Brommer said, “and wanting it and going out and getting a tenacity about you.”
Lickliter said Brommer had some off-season injuries that kept him from competing for playing time earlier this season.
“We obviously can use (him),” Lickliter said. “He's mobile and has got good size. We're hoping to continue to see that kind of productivity out of him.”
