Brackets racket: Wait 5 minutes and it all changes
Mike Hlas Jan. 17, 2014 2:21 pm
Like bowl-projections in September and October, NCAA tournament brackets in November, December, January and February are for entertainment purposes only.
So to illustrate the nature of these things, I'm keeping track of the Bracketology placement of Iowa and Iowa State in the NCAA men's tourney by ESPN's Joe Lunardi and CBSsports.com's Jerry Palm. Oh, the places the Hawkeyes and Cyclones will go and the teams they'll meet.
First, Lunardi:
Nov. 7: No. 7-seed Iowa vs. No. 10 UNLV in Orlando
No. 11-seed Iowa State vs. No. 6 Georgetown in Buffalo
Dec. 16: No. 6 Iowa vs. No. 11 winner of Arizona State/Oklahoma play-in game in Orlando
No. 5 Iowa State vs. No. 12 Toledo in Spokane
Jan. 2: No. 6 Iowa vs. No. 11 Arkansas in Raleigh
No. 4 Iowa State vs. No. 13 Manhattan in Spokane
Jan. 9: No. 6 Iowa vs. No. 11 Kansas State in Raleigh
No. 2 Iowa State vs. No. 15 Northern Colorado in St. Louis
Jan. 16: No. 4 Iowa vs. No. 13 Louisiana Tech in San Antonio
No. 3 Iowa State vs. No. 14 Boston U. in Raleigh
Five different opponents, three different seeds and three different sites so far for Iowa. Five different opponents, five different seeds and four different sites for Iowa State. And that's just from one bracketologist.
I give ESPN credit. It has all of Joe Lunardi's brackets archived on its bracketology page. It's not so easy to find Palm's once they've changed. In fact, I couldn't. If you can find any of his brackets for this season before this week's, shoot me the link/links for them and I'll update this. Here is his projections of this week:
Jan. 13: No. 3 Iowa vs. No. 14 Delaware in Raleigh
No. 2 Iowa State vs. No. 15 Northern Colorado in St. Louis
Jan. 17: No. 3 Iowa vs. No. 14 Stephen F. Austin in Raleigh
No. 2 Iowa State vs. No. 15 Vermont in St. Louis
We do not want our in-state teams to go to Spokane. Nothing against that city. I've been there. I liked it. But it's too hard to get to on short notice. St. Louis and Milwaukee work just fine, thanks.
