Big Ten wrestling tournament: Session 2 (Semis and consolation)

Mar. 6, 2010 9:13 pm
We're a little more than an hour away from the second session of the Big Ten Conference tournament. The University of Iowa has placed all 10 wrestlers in the semifinals, however, this round they'll be underdogs in three matches (according to seeds) and are the second seed in four #2 vs. #3 matches. One fo the matches they're favored in according to seed, is #1 Chad Beatty against Minnesota's #5 Sonny Yohn at 197. Beatty wrestled his first match since before the New Year in the quarterfinals, locking up one of the Big Ten's seven automatic bids to the NCAA Championships at that weight.
We're opening with consolation matches first so since all the Hawkeyes are in the semis there won't be any updates for a bit.
Again, just refresh and the post should update.
125: #2 Matt McDonough (Iowa) vs.#3 Zach Sanders (Minnesota): We're going. McDonough persistent as heck when he's on something. Gets a takedown with 36 seconds left. Up 2-0. McDonough with E1 to go up 3-0 at the start of the second. Sanders goes neutral to start third. McD up 3-0. McD T2 with 1:23 to go and up 5-0. McD wins 8-0
133: #2 Daniel Dennis (Iowa) vs. #3 Franklin Gomez (Michigan St.): Dennis scores a takedown in final 20 seconds to go up 4-2. Gomez gets a reversal late to tie it at 4-4, but then locks hands and Dennis wins, 5-4.
141: #3 Montell Marion (Iowa) vs. #2 Mike Thorn (Minnesota): Thorn controls the match and handles Marion, winning 12-3.
149: #1 Brent Metcalf (Iowa) vs. #4 Frank Molinaro (Penn St.): Metcalf opens it up late to beat Molinaro, 12-3.
157: #4 Jake Kerr (Iowa) vs. #1 Colton Salazar (Purdue): Salazar wins 6-2.
165: #2 Ryan Morningstar (Iowa) vs. #3 Colt Sponseller (OSU): Another close match between these two. Mstar gets escape to open scoring in second. Sponseller gets reversal in the third with 1:08 remaining to go up 3-1 and then hangs on the legs the final minujte to ride him out and win, 3-1.
174: #1 Jay Borschel (Iowa) vs. #5 Jordan Blanton (Illinois): Borschel wins, 6-0.
184: #3 Phil Keddy (Iowa) vs. #2 David Erwin (Penn St.): Keddy avenges a loss to Erwin from the dual meet and wins 4-1 with a first-period takedown.
197: #1 Chad Beatty (Iowa) vs. #5 Sonny Yohn (Minnesota): Yohn edges Beatty 7-6 in the first set of tiebreaker periods. Beatty called for locked hands in the first 30 seconds and then Yohn hangs on to win, riding Beatty out.
Hwt.: #2 Dan Erekson (Iowa) vs. #3 Cameron Wade (Penn State): Erekson wins 5-2. Match overshadowed by the altercation between Sanderson and Brands after Wade dives in at Erekson's knee after a whistle, sending him sprawling in pain. Brands runs out to try and defend his heavyweight. Then the two coaches yell back-and-forth. Erekson answers with a takedown and the win.
