An Iowa-Missouri bowl rematch?
Mike Hlas Nov. 13, 2011 6:51 pm
Bowl projections on Nov. 13 don't send people scurrying for airline and hotel reservations.
But if ESPN's projections from its Big Ten and Big 12 blogs come true, it will be Iowa vs. Missouri for a second straight postseason, only this time in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas instead of the Insight Bowl, where the Hawkeyes edged the Tigers, 27-24.
Missouri is 5-5, but has games left that it should win against Texas Tech and Kansas. Mizzou beat Texas 17-5 on Saturday.
The MCCB of T is at 11 a.m. on Dec. 31, at Houston's Reliant Stadium. Nice venue. Not a marquee bowl. It featured Baylor and Illinois last year.
The Big Ten blog has these projections. The Big 12 blog has these projections.
If both blogs are right, Nebraska will play Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl and Texas will face Ohio State in the Insight Bowl. That's a pretty good pair of games for the Fiesta Bowl Committee, which hasn't had the best year off the field. I think Michigan will beat Nebraska Saturday in Ann Arbor and go on to beat Ohio State the following week, thus putting a 10-2 Wolverines squad in the Fiesta.
But back to the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. As a sportswriter, I can't be using that unwieldy name every time I refer to the bowl. Anyone have any better suggestions? As of now, I lean toward the game's former name, the Texas Bowl.
