Aaron White is running with good basketball crowd

Iowa junior-to-be forward Aaron White probably wasn't a favorite to make the 12-player U.S. team for the upcoming World University Games in Russia.

There were 27 players at the tryouts, including Hawkeye guard Devyn Marble. And the list of those who made the team and didn't is impressive. But White clearly made great impressions on head coach Bob McKillop of Davidson and assistants John Beilein of Michigan and Frank Martin of South Carolina.

Here are the 12 players who are headed to Kazan. The opening game should be a U.S. romp, July 8 against Mali. It will get harder. But this will be a tough dozen players to beat, a team with six seniors, five juniors, and just one sophomore. One-third of the squad is formed by Big Ten players, one player starred for NCAA champion Louisville, and another was a key player for NIT-champ Baylor.

Then there's Creighton's Doug McDermott, a first-team All-America.
