Oct. 1, 2009 7:51 pm
A.J. Derby will hold a press conference Friday, presumably to announce his intention to play football at the University of Iowa.
Derby, a senior quarterback at Iowa City High, would neither confirm nor deny multiple reports by sources that he has committed to Iowa.
“There's going to be a press conference (today),” Derby said.
Iowa City High Coach Dan Sabers said the press conference is scheduled for today, mainly because Derby's father, former all-Big Ten linebacker John Derby, was out of town Thursday.
“I've got be fair to everybody,” Sabers said.
Derby has become one of the state's most-sought recruits in history with scholarships offers from Florida, Michigan, LSU, Miami, Florida State, Alabama and Nebraska. His brother, Zach, is a red-shirt freshman tight end at Iowa.
A month ago, Derby told reporters he still planned visit five schools.
“I didn't silently commit to Iowa,” Derby said at the time. “I didn't commit yet, and I'm going to take my officials.”
Derby, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 218 pounds, has completed 32 of 56 passes for 781 yards and seven touchdowns this fall. He's rushed for 311 yards and five touchdowns at 6.6 yards per carry.
