A closer look at the Prime Time League changes
May. 25, 2010 2:18 pm
A press release from Randy Larson about the upcoming Prime Time and Game Time leagues:
The summer basketball leagues for men and women known as Prime Time and Game Time will kick off again this summer. This is the 24th year for Prime Time and the 10th for Game Time. The leagues are moving to new nights this year to better accommodate the schedules of the college players. The women's league starts June 16 and will play on
Mondays and Wednesdays for about 6 weeks. The men will play on Sundays and some Tuesdays, beginning June 15.
Director of the leagues Randy Larson said: "There are some changes this summer that should make the games even more interesting and competitive in both leagues. Game Time is going to 6 teams because UNI's league-champion women are back in the league which of course we're delighted about. The other Game Time change is that their games will be at 6 and 7:30 on Mondays and Wednesdays instead of Tuesday/Thursday.
"Prime Time is going down to 4 teams to take advantage of the rare circumstance of both UNI and Iowa having less than 9 returning players playing this summer. The NCAA only allows 2 returning players per summer team so we usually have to have 6 or 8 teams to accommodate them all but this year we didn't. The benefit of fewer teams is that each team has more of the top players so the competition and level of play will be the highest it's ever been this year. To better accommodate the schedules of our college players who are almost all in summer school, we've moved the Prime Time games to Sundays at 4:30 and approximately every other Tuesday (with adjustments for the Fourth of July), at 6:00. We'll play both games at once but stagger the starting times about 10 minutes so the halftimes don't match up."
"Although it's hard to say for sure because some of them haven't even been signed yet, Coach McCaffery has informed me that they believe their new players will most likely play, along with almost all of their returning players. And along with UNI's great returning underclassmen, we're looking forward to Ali Farokhmanesh playing again. With all the excitement surrounding all 4 programs, it should be a fantastic summer for both leagues."
Both leagues play in the air-conditioned gyms at the North Liberty Recreation Center, and there is no admission charge. Both leagues have been approved for this summer by the NCAA and feature mostly college or ex-college players, with a few pro and high school players, depending on the year. For information about the leagues, go to www.primetimeleague.com or call Director Larson at 319 354-5500. Tryout night is June 7, with the men at 6 and the women at 7:30.
