Iowa football coach Kirk Ferentz is observing his 70th birthday today.
Ferentz, in his 27th year as Iowa’s head coach and 36th as a member of the Hawkeye football staff, is the second-oldest coach in FBS. North Carolina’s Bill Belichick is 73.
Jack McKeon was 72 when he managed the then-Florida Marlins to the 2003 World Series championship. Geno Auriemma was 71 when his Connecticut team won the NCAA women’s basketball title four months ago.
Bobby Bowden became the oldest coach to win a national college football championship when he was 69 in 1999.
Were Ferentz a U.S. Senator, he would only be the 36th-oldest. The eldest is Iowa’s own Chuck Grassley, at 91. Grassley is older than any of the 435 U.S. Congress members.
On Aug. 1, 1955, the Brooklyn Dodgers beat the Milwaukee Braves 4-3 before a crowd of 3,774 at Milwaukee’s County Stadium. Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron played in that game.
