IOWA CITY — Iowa defensive lineman Noah Shannon has been cleared to practice as the NCAA reexamines its sports wagering reinstatement rules, head football coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday.
Ferentz remains unsure of “when we’ll learn what his status moving forward is going to be.” The NCAA’s announcement last week said a final vote on any changes is expected to “occur at the end of October.”
“At least we got him on (the) field now,” Ferentz said of the sixth-year senior. “He’s back on the roster and able to be part of the team as a football player instead of a guy just kind of helping out a little bit.”
Ferentz does not know how much time it will take Shannon to be game-ready. Even without the suspension, the former all-Big Ten honorable mention would have missed some time at the beginning of the season because of an injury.
“We’ve never been in this situation,” Ferentz said. “He’s missed a lot of time. … Hasn’t been in pads in quite a while now, so we’ll just see. But I don’t know even when the decisions can be made, so at least we have ample time to get him ready hopefully.”
