Game notes: The No. 21 Hawkeyes are back at Carver-Hawkeye Arena for a matchup against Evansville. Iowa opened its season with an 85-51 win over Southern to begins its second season under head coach Jan Jensen.
Center Ava Heiden had a career-performance in the season opener, scoring 24 points and collecting 14 boards — both team-highs against Southern. Heiden was a part of Iowa’s starting lineup as anticipated, with teammate Hannah Stuelke recording 20 points in the win.
“I think she's definitely worked super hard over the summer, but also she's just gotten more opportunity this year,” Kylie Feuerback said. “I think having more opportunity this year in the five position to go out there and gain confidence their game experience has been really good for her.”
The Hawkeyes, however, had 24 turnovers in their season opener, a point of concern Jensen mentioned following the game. Iowa had 22 assists, led by Chit-Chat Wright’s seven.
“I think as she gets more and more confident, I think we can really empower her to be like, ‘Okay, you go, you take it over,’” Jensen said. “If we give her power, I think you'll see more and more of her with that.”
Iowa’s matchup against Southern last week was driven by physicality, a playing style Jensen said was good to compete against early before facing other physical programs throughout the season. The Hawkeyes could test out their quick passes, facilitated mostly by Wright, and work through immense pressure in transition.
“The nothing quite simulates a real press until you get in the game with the lights on,” Jensen said. “It's constant pressure, and it's always pushing you to a level of uncomfortability, which is good later on, but when you're going through it, it's not so good.”
Evansville heads to Iowa City after falling in its first matchup of the season against Southeast Missouri State, 71-66. The Aces are led by head coach Robyn Scherr in her fifth season with the squad.
Guard Cameryn Runner led the Aces with 26 points and 11 rebounds in their season opener. The Missouri Valley Conference’s Freshman of the Year last season started in all 32 games last season, averaging 15.5 points per game. The loss was Runner’s first career double-double.
