IOWA CITY — Iowa offensive lineman Cade Borud will serve a one-game suspension following his July arrest for operating while intoxicated, head coach Kirk Ferentz said Saturday.
Borud was charged last month after police say he registered a breath alcohol concentration of 0.177 percent — more than twice the legal limit. He allegedly “had a drunken-like gaze and did not know what road he was on.“
“It’s unfortunate any time a player makes a bad decision,” Ferentz said Saturday after the team’s open practice. “He’s remorseful about it.”
Along with the one-game suspension, Borud will be on the scout team for that week of practice and has to do community service on that Friday and Saturday.
“We all understand the line’s been drawn, and it’s going to be double jeopardy moving forward,” Ferentz said. “But hopefully we don’t have to go down that path.”
Borud transferred from North Dakota to Iowa as a walk-on earlier this year. He started all 12 games at center last season for the Fighting Hawks.
He was the second Hawkeye of the summer to receive an OWI charge. Wide receiver Kaleb Brown was arrested in late June.
“We’ve had plenty of guys come through that had fun, but you got to be smart, too, especially in this day and age,” Ferentz said. “Luckily, nobody’s been harmed.”
