IOWA CITY — Iowa offensive lineman Cade Borud was arrested early Saturday morning and faces a charge of operating while intoxicated.
Borud allegedly “had a drunken-like gaze and did not know what road he was on,” according to the criminal complaint. Police say he consented to sobriety tests and registered a breath alcohol concentration of 0.177 percent — more than twice the legal limit.
The arrest happened at 2:34 a.m. in Polk County. Borud, who turned 21 earlier this summer, also received a citation for allegedly driving on the wrong side of a two-way highway.
Borud, a Pleasant Hill native, transferred from North Dakota to Iowa as a walk-on earlier this year. He started all 12 games at center in 2023 and was named to the Missouri Valley Football Conference’s all-newcomer team.
“The UI Athletics department and football program are aware of Cade Borud’s citation over the weekend,” team spokesman Matt Weitzel said in a text message to The Gazette. “He is subject to established university protocol regarding the UI Student-Athlete Code of Conduct and the rules and regulations set for members of the football program.”
This is the second OWI arrest of the summer for Iowa football. Wide receiver Kaleb Brown was arrested in June and faces charges of operating while intoxicated and possessing a fictitious license or ID. Brown will be suspended for one game.
