IOWA CITY — Iowa true freshman James Resar has moved from quarterback to wide receiver, head coach Kirk Ferentz said Tuesday in his weekly news conference.
“We looked at things and kind of felt like that might be his best avenue to the field,” Ferentz said. “He’s a good athlete, good-sized guy and was doing a good job unfortunately until he got injured.” (He suffered a non-contact knee injury last week.)
His speed has been well-documented, as he ran a 10.67-second 100-meter dash in high school.
Resar had a four-star rating as a recruit from 247Sports and three-star ratings from the other prominent recruiting sites. He signed with the Hawkeyes over offers from Indiana, Georgia Tech and Wake Forest, among other programs.
Resar’s position move leaves the Hawkeyes with four quarterbacks on the roster — Cade McNamara, Brendan Sullivan, redshirt freshman Marco Lainez and walk-on Jackson Stratton.
Sullivan is the first-team quarterback on Iowa’s Week 10 depth chart, followed by Lainez. McNamara is out with a concussion.
“It’s a little bit ironic that all of a sudden it’s a thin pool,” Ferentz said. “But we’ll go with the guys we have and find a way.”
