Iowa opens its 2022 football season Saturday at Kinnick Stadium with the program’s first meeting against South Dakota State, a team ranked No. 3 in the FCS.

Line — Iowa -14

Mike Hlas — This country will never get its problems fixed as long as there are more Dakotas than Hawaiis. Iowa 20, South Dakota State 7

John Steppe — Apparently South Dakota is, among other things, the Swinged Cat State. I’m not a cat person. Iowa 28, South Dakota State 17

Jeff Johnson — Iowa has a football coaching staff/support staff of 36. South Dakota State has a football coaching staff/support staff of 15. Iowa 36, South Dakota State 15

Rob Gray — There’s something to be said for continuity and John Stiegelmeier has provided that for the Jackrabbits. He’s in his 26th season as SDSU’s head coach and his teams simply keep getting better. The Jacks have reached at least the semifinals of the FCS playoffs for four straight seasons and they’re once again considered one of the best teams at that level. Heck, they edged Kansas in 2014, but obviously the Hawkeyes ain’t the Jayhawks. Not remotely. So I expect a slow burn type of game with Iowa’s defense serving as the star component. The Hawkeyes offense will do just enough — and finish the game strong. Iowa 28, South Dakota State 7

Beth Malicki — For some it’s pumpkin spiced lattes or the turning colors of leaves, but my signal of the changing seasons is The Gazette asking me to make prognostications about something I know nothing about. Iowa 31, South Dakota State 13

Todd Brommelkamp — SDSU linebacker Isaiah Stalbird hails from Kearney, Neb. His backup calls Grand Island, Neb., home. No one recruits the Tri Cities like John Stiegelmeier. Iowa 34, South Dakota State 7
