IOWA CITY — Depth charts released at the start of spring football come with several caveats, especially at Iowa.
Newcomers almost always are not on Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz’s first depth chart of the spring. A lot else can change, too, between March 26 and the end of August.
That being said, the Hawkeyes released their 2025 spring depth chart on Wednesday — the same day as their first of 15 spring practices.
Brendan Sullivan is listed as Iowa’s first-team spring quarterback after appearing in 10 games and starting three times for the Hawkeyes in 2024. He completed 71.7 percent of his passes while throwing three touchdowns and three interceptions.
“Can’t say enough about Brendan Sullivan, going back to June when he showed up last year — his work ethic, just his personality, his leadership traits,” Ferentz said.
Auburn transfer Hank Brown, who practiced with the team ahead of the 2024 Music City Bowl, is the No. 2 quarterback on the depth chart. Mark Gronowski — a South Dakota State transfer and former FCS Walter Payton Award recipient — is not listed and is not expected to play in the spring as he recovers from surgery.
On the offensive line, Jack Dotzler is the first-team left tackle after Mason Richman’s graduation, and Kade Pieper is the first-team right guard after Connor Colby’s graduation. Gennings Dunker remains at right tackle.
“The guys that are in line to compete for those jobs, right now at least, they didn't just get here,” Ferentz said. “They've been here in the program a couple years. I think their physical maturity is going to enable them to compete and hopefully keep our standard where we'd like it to be.”
Iowa’s first-team linebackers are Jaden Harrell at middle linebacker and Karson Sharar at weakside linebacker as the Hawkeyes try to replace Jay Higgins, Nick Jackson and Kyler Fisher. Cedar Rapids native Jaxon Rexroth is the first-team Leo linebacker.
None of the newcomers who joined the Hawkeyes after the bowl game are listed on the depth chart. Redshirt freshmen to appear on the depth chart include second-team wide receiver K.J. Parker, second-team defensive end Joseph Anderson, second-team Leo linebacker Derek Weisskopf and second-team cornerback Rashad Godfrey Jr.
