INDIANAPOLIS — Iowa football has released its 2024 preseason depth chart, and it includes a few second-year players as starters.
On the offensive side of the ball, redshirt freshman Jarriett Buie is listed as one of the three first-team wide receivers alongside Seth Anderson and Kaleb Brown.
Buie, a former three-star recruit from Tampa, Fla., saw action in three games as a true freshman.
On the defensive side of the ball, sophomore John Nestor is the first-team cornerback on the opposite side of Jermari Harris.
He is ahead of third-year sophomore Deshaun Lee and junior T.J. Hall as they compete for the spot vacated by now-NFL cornerback Cooper DeJean.
Nestor appeared in 10 games in 2023 — more than any other true freshman. He also is the second-team player at Iowa’s Cash safety position.
Here are some other notes from Wednesday’s release of the depth chart, which coincides with the second day of the Big Ten’s football media days:
- Beau Stephens is the starting left guard, with redshirt freshman (and 2024 Solon Beef Days hay bale toss champion) Kade Pieper backing him up. Nick DeJong is the second-team right guard behind Connor Colby.
- At running back, redshirt freshman Kamari Moulton is the third-team player instead of Jaziun Patterson. Leshon Williams is the starter, and Kaleb Johnson is the second-teamer.
- Northwestern quarterback transfer Brendan Sullivan is behind both Cade McNamara and Marco Lainez on the preseason depth chart. Given Sullivan’s extensive experience in the conference, he seems likely to eventually be ahead of Lainez as the second-team quarterback.
- The depth charts list 12 positions, with the 11 starting players varying depending on formations and personnel groups. Preseason depth charts also often vary from what the Hawkeyes actually show on Week 1.
