Iowa football will not start the year ranked in the USA Today AFCA Coaches Poll.
The preseason poll, released Monday, had the Hawkeyes just outside of the Top 25. Unofficially, they’re No. 26 after receiving the most votes among unranked teams.
It’s the first time since 2018 that the Hawkeyes started the season unranked in the USA Today poll, which consists of 66 FBS head coaches. Iowa went 9-4 in that 2018 season with a win in the Outback Bowl.
Three of Iowa’s 2022 opponents are ranked in the poll. Ohio State is No. 2, Michigan is No. 6 and Wisconsin is No. 20.
The Associated Press will release its preseason Top 25 poll next Monday.
The Cleveland.com poll of Big Ten beat writers released last month had the Hawkeyes finishing second in the Big Ten West behind Wisconsin.
