Iowa defensive back Brenden Deasfernandes enters transfer portal

IOWA CITY — Iowa defensive back Brenden Deasfernandes will enter the transfer portal, he said Sunday in a social media post.

Deasfernandes appeared in all 12 regular-season games this season although his work was almost exclusively on special teams. He was not listed on Iowa’s defensive depth chart.

The Belleville, Mich., native arrived at Iowa in 2020 and did not see game action in his first two years on campus. He was limited to only one game in 2022 because of an injury.

“I want to express my gratitude to the University of Iowa for giving me the chance to be a Hawkeye and play football at a level I’ve dreamt of since childhood,” Deasfernandes said in his social media post. “I want to also give thanks to the university for shaping me into the person and player I am today.”

Deasfernandes is the first player from Iowa’s 2023 roster to announce intentions to enter the transfer portal. The first transfer portal window will officially open on Monday.
