IOWA CITY — Iowa quarterback Cade McNamara and tight end Luke Lachey are not listed on the Hawkeyes’ depth chart ahead of Friday’s game at UCLA as they continue to recover from injuries.
That presumably clears the way for Brendan Sullivan to make his second start as a Hawkeye. The ex-Northwestern quarterback was 7-of-10 for 93 passing yards, 58 rushing yards and two touchdowns (one passing and one rushing) in his start against Wisconsin.
McNamara has been recovering from a concussion. Iowa’s usual third-team quarterback, Marco Lainez, also is out after suffering a hand injury last week that required surgery. Jackson Stratton — the walk-on who transferred in the spring after going 4-of-17 in two seasons at Colorado State — is behind Sullivan as the second-team quarterback.
Ferentz already ruled out wide receiver Reece Vander Zee and tight end Addison Ostrenga for the UCLA game when he spoke with reporters on Saturday. With Lachey and Ostrenga not on the depth chart, Zach Ortwerth is Iowa’s first-team player at tight end.
On defense, cornerback John Nestor is not listed on Iowa’s depth chart. The second-year player from Chicago has not played since last month’s loss at Michigan State. True freshman Jaylen Watson is on the depth chart as a second-teamer in place of Nestor.
Iowa Coach Kirk Ferentz will hold his weekly news conference on Tuesday afternoon, which will likely include more details on Iowa’s current injury situation.
