Here are five important storylines to watch in Thursday’s Iowa high school state-qualifying track and field meets concerning Gazette area teams. In each class, in each event, 24 entrants advance to next week’s state championships.
Brackets are out for the 2024 Iowa high school team tennis postseason. Girls’ regionals begin May 10, boys’ substates on May 11 with Linn-Mar, Iowa City West and Cedar Rapids Washington all hosting.
Track and field: Actually it’s field and track for the Linn-Mar girls, who score 62 field-event points in an MVC Valley Division title repeat. Iowa City West wins the boys’ championship.
Regional tennis singles and doubles pairings were released Wednesday morning by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union. All meets in classes 2A and 1A are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. on Monday.
Track and field: Solon-Mount Vernon girls’ duel in the Wamac is the top area storyline as the area conference meets loom.
Iowa City West hosted Cedar Rapids Xavier in an Iowa high school girls’ tennis match Tuesday.

The River Valley Conference’s hold on the top of the Class 1A Iowa high school boys’ soccer rankings didn’t change, but the team at the top did. Track and field: Area Super Ten for April 17, 2024. Solon girls, Iowa City West remain No. 1 in the area, but Mount Vernon’s girls are closing.
Drake Relays (Saturday boys): Iowa City West’s Aidan Jacobsen emerged from a four-wide deadlock in the final 40 meters and claimed the boys’ 400-meter hurdles championship.
High school volleyball notes: Behind a new face (freshman setter Zane Ehler) and a more-than-willing position move (from Paycee Sorgenfrey), Tipton is on the move. The Tigers are 11-2 with eight straight wins.
