Here is a look at eight Gazette-area teams to watch for the 2024 Iowa high school baseball season. The first day of competition is Monday.
Class 3A No. 9-ranked Iowa City High beat Western Dubuque 10-0 in an Iowa high school girls’ soccer match Tuesday at City High.
Class 3A No. 7 Linn-Mar defeated No. 9 City High, 2-1, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference, Valley Division battle at Linn-Mar Stadium. Win or lose, it was a test the Iowa City High girls’ soccer team wanted.
The River Valley Conference’s hold on the top of the Class 1A Iowa high school boys’ soccer rankings didn’t change, but the team at the top did. Hall of Fame boys’ wrestling coach Brad Smith will come out of retirement again, leading Clear Creek Amana as interim head coach. He will fill in for CCA Coach Kyle Forness, who will miss next season as he fulfills his obligation with Army reserves.
Cedar Rapids Prairie’s Kylie Wachtl posted her first hole-in-one on the No. 9 hole Wednesday at Twin Pines Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. She finished in a three-way tie for second, one shot back of Linn-Mar medalist Morgan Rupp at the CRANDIC golf meet.

Iowa City High announced Tuesday that Bill McTaggart will be its new head varsity boys’ basketball coach. McTaggart spent 23 successful seasons as girls’ head coach, including winning a state championship.
