Chris Kingsbury had 19 points for the Hawkeyes in that 1995 game, in the NIT. His son, Carter Kingsbury, plays for the current Iowa team.
Six Hawkeyes are averaging between 11 and 16.5 points per game. Though he came off the bench each game, guard Drew Thelwell scored in double-figures in all of them.
The Cougars average 93.7 points, the Hawkeyes 91.3.
Washington State was 25-10 last season. It lost to Iowa State in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Kyle Smith left as coach to take a similar job at Stanford and WSU’s players left en masse.
Only one player who played in that NCAA game for the Cougars is still with the team. David Riley, the Big Sky Coach of the Year in 2023 and 2024 at Eastern Washington, was hired to replace Riley,. He brought four players from his 21-11 team of last season on the 68-mile trip from EWU to Washington State. All are Cougar starters, along with Washington transfer Nate Calmese (17.7 ppg)
Wazzu has outrebounded its opponents by 11.7 per game. Seven of its players average at least 12 points. Its wins were against Portland State, Bradley and Idaho.
Five current Cougars were named the Freshman of the Year for their respective conference prior to arriving at WSU, including Nate Calmese (Southland), Cedric Coward (NWC/D-III), Dane Erikstrup (CCAA/ D-II), Ethan Price (Big Sky), and LeJuan Watts (Big Sky).
The two teams’ only previous meeting was in 1963 at the Far West Classic.
