What to know: University of South Carolina Upstate of the Big South Conference is in Spartanburg, so of course its teams are the Spartans. The Upstate is a region of the northwest part of the state.

The Spartans were 10-20 last season. They haven’t had a winning record since they were 17-16 in 2016-17.

Their first-year coach is Marty Richter, a Waterloo native and Simpson College graduate. He was an assistant coach for the last six years at Drake.

USC Upstate is 0-6 against Division I teams this season. It lost 87-76 to East Tennessee State and 98-74 to Queens University last Friday and Saturday in Johnson City, Tenn.

The Spartans’ leading scorer is 6-foot-6 freshman Mister Dean, who averages 18 points.

“Mister Dean is special,” Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery said Monday.

Iowa is coming off a 77-69 loss to Utah State last Friday in Kansas City, Mo. The Hawkeyes will have a week between games after this, then host Northwestern.

McCaffery will see Northwestern in person Thursday when he attends the Butler-Northwestern game in Tempe, Ariz. His son, former Hawkeye Patrick McCaffery, is averaging 14.4 points and has made 16 of 32 three-pointers for 4-1 Butler. Former Hawkeye Connor McCaffery is a Butler assistant coach.

Four of Iowa’s next five games will be against major-conference foes (at Michigan, Iowa State, vs. Utah in Sioux Falls, S.D.)

If Iowa beats Upstate as is highly expected, it will be the 100th victory in the college career of Hawkeye guard Drew Thelwell.
