What to know: The Hawkeyes started slowly, but pulled away to an 89-67 win over Texas A&M-Commerce Monday in their home opener.
Payton Sandfort had 20 points, 11 rebounds and seven assists. Pryce Sandfort added a career-high 13 points. The brothers combined for seven 3-pointers.
Southern, from Baton Rouge, La., is coming off a season-opening 93-79 loss at South Dakota Monday. Senior guard Tidjiane Dioumassi of Paris, a preseason first-team All-Southwestern Athletic Conference selection, scored 30 points for Southern.
On Wednesday afternoon, Dioumassi led Division I in free throw shooting with his 12-for-12.
Last season was Kevin Johnson’s first as Southern’s coach, and his Jaguars were 18-14 overall, 12-6 in the SWAC. The 18 wins were Southern’s most since the 2015-16 season.
When the two teams last met, Luka Garza made 14 of 15 field goal tries and scored 41 points in Iowa’s 103-76 win in 2020.
