What to know: Iowa has another buy-game win lined up here with the Rider Broncs of Lawrenceville, N.J. and the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
Rider does have the distinction of being the only Division I team with three true road wins through Saturday’s play. After losing 85-50 at UCLA, the Broncs won at San Diego, Coppin State and Navy, the last two by 11 points apiece.
Rider was picked to finish seventh in the MAAC preseason coaches’ poll. It has transfers from Wake Forest, DePaul, Massachusetts, Arkansas State, Houston Christian and Alcorn State.
Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery is 12-6 against Rider, having coached in the MAAC for three years at Lehigh and five at Siena. His 2008 Siena team beat Rider in the league’s title game to advance to the NCAA tourney.
The only time the Hawkeyes have played Rider, Iowa was ranked third in the nation in December 1986 and beat the Broncs, 104-71.
Rider has been to the NCAA tournament three times, but not since 1994.
Iowa is fresh off a 76-66 win over Washington State last Friday in Moline, Ill. Owen Freeman had 21 points for the Hawkeyes, giving them four different 20-point scorers in four games (Payton Sandfort, Pryce Sandfort, Josh Dix).
Freeman is averaging 17.0 points, Payton Sandfort 16.8. Freeman is tied for third in the Big Ten in rebounds (9.3 per game) and blocked shots (2.0).
