IOWA CITY — The nickname came early in Chazadi Wright’s AAU days.
“I think I was 10,” she said. “We had a set of twins on our team, and they gave it to me because I was so quiet.”
Wright eventually found her voice (“I’m more talkative now,” she said). Still, the nickname stuck.
Chit-Chat.
A 5-foot-4 guard with three years of women’s basketball eligibility remaining, Wright has committed to Iowa.
She played her first year at Georgia Tech.
“I wanted a new beginning, something different,” Wright told The Gazette on Wednesday. “Being from Atlanta, this is crazy for me.”
Wright (her first name is pronounced “KAZZ-i-dee”) arrived in Iowa City on Monday, departed on Tuesday and announced her commitment Wednesday.
“The relationship with the coaches and my new teammates, I felt like I’ve known them for a long time,” she said.
One new member of the Hawkeyes’ staff — assistant LaSondra Barrett, who was hired last week — also made the Georgia Tech-to-Iowa move.
“That was a big factor, too,” Wright said.
Wright played in 33 games in her freshman season, starting 12, as the Yellow Jackets went 22-11 and reached the NCAA tournament.
She averaged 7.2 points per game, posting 86 assists against 39 turnovers and shot 37.1 percent from the field, 32.3 percent from 3-point range and 88.6 percent from the free-throw line.
“I think I would say I’m very dynamic,” Wright said. “I can shoot. I can dish the ball. I’m a team player.
“What the team needs, I’m going to do.”
Her arrival softens the blow of Aaliyah Guyton’s decision to transfer from Iowa after one year. Guyton will continue her career at Illinois.
